The Ground
At Southwell School, the Year 3 and 4 students had long dreamed of a playground space they could truly call their own. While other year groups enjoyed dedicated play areas, these students made do with the well-known “Blue Bars” — a simple but much-loved part of the school grounds that eventually became symbolic of a bigger vision.

Driven by a passionate school community and inspired by the students themselves, the project came to life through the collective efforts of staff, families, and supporters. A successful fundraising gala brought the community together, creating the momentum needed to turn years of dreaming into reality. With strong collaboration between the school, parents, and Playground Creations, the foundation was laid for a play space designed especially for the adventurous and imaginative Year 3 and 4 learners.

The Creation
Working closely with Southwell School, Playground Creations designed a vibrant and engaging playground that reflected the students’ ideas, energy, and sense of fun. Student input played a key role throughout the design process, helping shape the twists, turns, colours, and climbing experiences incorporated into the final concept.

The playground combines adventurous climbing elements with dynamic movement-based play opportunities, encouraging confidence, exploration, and active play. Soft emerald-green AstroTurf surfacing was installed to create a safe and visually striking environment that blended seamlessly into the surrounding school grounds.

The Play
The finished playground has quickly become a magical hub for connection, creativity, and adventure at Southwell School.

From climbing and balancing to imaginative games and social play, the space offers endless opportunities for students to challenge themselves, build friendships, and create lasting memories. For the Year 3 and 4 students who waited patiently for a playground of their own, the result is something truly special — a kingdom built just for them.
